Wildfire Season

We woke up this morning to the smell of smoke and dark skies. It's hard to see in the picture, but the sun is almost totally blotted out by the smoke. There are two major wildfires burning and several smaller ones to the north and south of us. Our house isn't in danger, but our property and building material up north are. It's a helpless feeling, just sitting here waiting to see what the winds will do and praying for rain. So far, one cabin has burned in the fire to the north, and about 20 more are in immediate danger.

To the south of us near Homer there's a much larger fire, and that's where the smoke is coming from. The winds are carrying it north and the smell is overwhelming. I can't imagine what it's like closer to the fires. We're supposed to go to a wedding in Homer tomorrow, which means a 5 hour drive through smoke. Yikes. I'm keeping the kids inside today and praying Sam's asthma doesn't flare up. We all have sore throats and stuffy noses.

We've had some crazy thunderstorms this week, and since we've had such a dry spring, the lightning sparked several fires...they're saying dozens on the news. We need some rain!

I think I'll bake some goodies for the trip...I'm going to try out Pioneer Woman's cinnamon rolls. Have a great weekend.

oh no! that sucks! i remember that happening quite a bit...strange to have so many thunderstorms though. that was almost unheard of when we first moved up there and then as the years went by it happened a lot more often. so strange. i hope your property is out of danger! safe travels to homer!
